Computational Thinking

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • We are connected, ubiquitous(day or night) empowered and visible.
  • We are empowered as learners and teachers to learn, create and share.
  • It is not just a tool but a way of transforming the way we learn, opens up new uncharted experiences and opportunities.
  • Language is essential through keeping conversations going or having those conversations via google meets, blogging, zoom, skype and in an everyday world face to face.
  • The New Zealand Technology Curriculum states that technology assists the making of connections by enabling students to enter and explore new learning environments, overcoming barriers of distance and time.
The above has become more apparent lately with the need for distance learning  and connecting away from our schools, extended whanau, work and social environments.
There has been appreciation from some of my parents with the engagement and interest that their child shows and delivers through the class online learning site.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
  • With support from my manaiakalani facilitator we posted blog class work via photos on slides for the first couple of weeks of distance learning and emailed them to my class whanau.
  • Learnt to upload photos from emails, organise and insert onto my class photo page learning site.
  • Learnt to add different backgrounds to pages on my site.
  • Continuing to make my slide learning work more appealing and exciting for my learners each week by embedding audio, youtube clips, visuals, jip, backgrounds, fonts etc...
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
  • Coding Activities from the app Scratch Junior that kids can use on ipads.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
  • uploading photos.
  • sending photos.

Devices

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy

A gem statement   Make kindness go viral
                               behaviour thinking

I enjoyed Fiona's talk on being cybersmart in a digital world and could relate to it as I have been engaging in areas of it during the lockdown period with working online and engagement with children and whanau. In my home environment online distance learning, embedding, blogging and google hangouts is happening each school day with my own children's learning.
The other understandings I got out of today's kaupapa and pedagogy of Manaiakalani are -

  • Empowering learners to be positive.
  • When blogging make it clear for children to use nice, positive words.
  • Cybersmart is a whole school focus, targeted for specific levels throughout the school.
  • Connecting, supporting and empowering students in order to confidently use devices.
  • Devices make it possible so kids can manage the digital technology themselves away from school as well.
  • Whenever and where ever we share online it's personal.
  • What elevates positive actions.
  • Show it in a visual form what image, text, words show a positive element. Show it around your class.
  • Having a big picture of children's tech journey is important as they progress from juniors to seniors and beyond.
  • For our learners a blog piece should be a piece to be proud of. It must reflect positive comments from peers and whanau. Involving whanau makes them aware of the whole cybersmart experience.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capabilities or workflow as a professional?
  • An insight into how Hapara Teacher Dashboard operates.
  • Digital dig chromebook use with shortcuts.
  • Using the whiteboard app as a tool for juniors.
  • The beginnings of screencastify.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
  • Whiteboard as a tool for my junior learners.
  • Chromebook use with shortcuts ie: control key.
  • Tips for a successful google class hangout.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
  • Video app and uploading a video to a learning site.
  • Inserting a google slide onto a learning site.

Enabling Access Sites

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • Being connected is what it's all about!
  • Learning is shared visibly.
  • Making sure all are reached.
  • It's a human experience of sharing and connecting
  • Being connected forms a community act of sharing.
  • Sharing creates connecting.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
  • Photos are a great hook for learners on your class site.
  • Record myself giving instructions on one of my slides or do a video so the children can see me.
  • To set up a google meet with my class from their bubbles.
  • I made a 10 deck slide for my class site based on a book theme that had pics, moving images and a story audio. This covered a range of curriculum areas for their learning.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The ten deck slide and a having a google meet.

Take a look at sites!

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today's powerful word used by Dorothy was visible''.
∙Technology through class sites makes our teaching and learning visible - this is the whole kaupapa.
∙Having a class site with visible links the children can see and participate in the learning.
∙Making it visible is important not only to the learner but also whanau and teacher.
∙Keeping the learning journey visible to the learner is a powerful tech tool it is never invisible.
∙Technology has made learning visible to students.
∙Students have the ability to read the teachers mind leading to success.
∙WALT's have opened the learning journey engaging the learner with the child at the centre.
∙Manaiakalani has gifted the teachers and children the learning process through class sites.
∙There is a real audience and purpose to inform others and create points of view.

I enjoyed Kerry's presentation on the window dressing clip from Mary Queen of Shops. It was very interesting and a great way of making us reflect as teachers on not over doing or under doing our tech work. Also I guess creating steps that are easy to access.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Unfortunately I found today's session quite fast paced and I am finding this online learning quite daunting at times. I missed a couple of steps to begin the part of making a google site from scratch just by being on a previous link in Gareth's section.  Became a little better with the second part of group work with creating the beginnings of a second site.  However that too became challenging to follow so I made the decision for my own sanity to leave the hangout an hour earlier to finishing:(
This week coming I would like to revise my notes and give the create a new site a third go. Perhaps may need a google hang out time with Cheryl in order for her to answer my 'troubleshooting'
questions.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Another useful reading site called Epic readers that I signed up too which looks like a great reading tool for myself and my learners to use.
The journal site that shows teacher notes for the new Junior Journal readers.
Viewing the beginnings and workings of making a future reading group site.

Data and Sheets

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani, kaupapa and pedagogy?

There are so many ways out there to connect using technology! Especially valuable and needed during our current situation in own country with our lockdown.  Sharing has indeed become the new way of connecting.

The following are little gems I have come away with from Dorothy's slide this morning;
If it's worth teaching it's worth capturing.
If it's worth learning it's worth capturing.

Having students exposed to technology learning even if it's in bite sized pieces to start off with.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Really enjoyed being involved in my first large google hangout and navigating all the areas to connect into, disconnect and reconnect! Amazing.  Found today quite challenging being on line when the time came to need help! and a particularly challenging topic for today.  However I did find that further practice in using google sheets could then be put to use as a data tool for recording my students learning.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Unfortunately most of today's work was more aimed at the senior to intermediate end of a school not for a junior area. However I could see if my facilitator could do a mini lesson on getting the children to make a couple of markings on a familiar map as part of google maps.

Media hype!

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa pedagogy?

Anne Sinclair had good food for thought for me around Manaiakalani.  I liked how she talked about bringing it back to create, explore and discover through play and technology.  It was also good to learn that create is a doing word and involves multiple senses of the whole body.  We are empowering our learners through choice, being creative thinkers and developing ideas.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or work flow as a professional?

Creating a playlist chanel will help as a shortcut to planning and will make it easier to access appropriate media.
Setting up a you-tube channel.
Google drawing.
Google slides.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

The  you-tube playlist channel for viewing purposes and the google draw component of slides.

Keep it real!

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I found the teacher actions, steps 1-7 slide promoting student learning informative and learnt how it linked with the manaiakalani vision. Teaching through technology empowers our students to become confident and capable learners. I am beginning to see some of my students showing this during their technology learning time.  A few of them have the confidence to be buddy teachers for others.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I liked learning how I can go about making a keep file and that I can use it as an app on my phone too. As a teacher this is going to make my life that little bit more organised. Along with the subtitles in my emails. Learning and creating my subtitles has already become a great shortcut. I also liked being able to navigate and organise my calendar, changing colours, dates and adding guests will be a great system to use.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

As a junior teacher I found that today's session was not helpful for my learners. However helpful to me on a professional level for my learning and implementing.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Organisation of my calendar!
